Brown vs. Board of Education Exhibit

The Evansville African American Museum, with the generous support of the Evansville Bar Association, present a new exhibit on the landmark 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision, Brown vs. Board of Education. The exhibit, developed by the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research, consists of 12 panels that take visitors through the history and significance of the decision that led to the desegregation of public schools throughout the United States.

Fabulous First Sunday!

Our Fabulous First Friday series moves to Sunday in August. Join us Sunday, August 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This month’s topic will be the history and contributions of the Prince Hall Shriners and Daughters of Isis. Special guests will be members of Cawthar Temple No. 118 and court.

In addition to a fabulous history lesson, enjoy entertainment, finger food and refreshments. Museum members are admitted free; Non-member admission is $10, payable at the door. Come on out Sunday, August 7 for another fabulous community history event!

Celebrate Juneteenth at the Museum!

Juneteenth, or African American Emancipation Day,  is the oldest recognized celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, tracing its origins to Galveston, Texas in 1865. Today, Juneteenth celebrates freedom and encourages self-development and respect for all cultures.

Road Trip To Tennessee

The Evansville African American Museum is sponsoring a road trip back in time to the Wessyngton Plantation and The Adams Museum on Saturday, June 20, 2009. The tour is $55 per person and includes:

  • A special guided tour of Wessyngton Plantation by John F. Baker Jr., author of “The Washingtons of Wessyngton Plantation: Stories of My Family’s Journey to Freedom.”

  • Evansville resident Mattie Miller and other slave descendants will share the stories of their ancestors.
  • Admission to the Adams Museum in Adams, Tenn. and a sumptuous Southern-style  lunch prepared by the Old School Cafeteria. (You can make entree and dessert selections when you register).

The price, including transportation, is $55 per person and is nonrefundable once your reservation is placed. The tour will depart at 6 a.m. Saturday, June 20 from the parking lot of the C.K. Newsome Center, 100 E. Walnut St., and return the same day. Reservation deadline is June 10. To reserve your seat, call the museum at (812) 423-5188.

EAAM Flashback: The American Spiritual Ensemble

The American Spiritual Ensemble made its second appearance in Evansville in February 2009. Members and friends of the Evansville African American Museum enjoyed a wonderful evening at the University of Evansville’s Shanklin Theatre. Enjoy this rendition of “Amazing Grace” by Dr. Angelique Clay, soprano, and Prof. Cliff Jackson, pianist, performed at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Ky.

Welcome to the Evansville African American Museum!

Welcome to the online home of the Evansville African American Museum!

Our mission is to develop and maintain a resource and cultural center to collect, preserve and interpret the history and traditions of African American families, organizations and communities. The museum is located in a restored portion of the Lincoln Gardens federal housing project in Evansville, Indiana, just east of Downtown Evansville.

Our museum features interactive exhibits as well as a showcase of early life in Lincoln Gardens.

Museum hours: Tuesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays, though special showings can be arranged by appointment.
